Designing a new landscape element for a client is always an exciting task, and at Southwest Tree Care & Landscape Design, we specialize in the design and installation of several different types of landscaping, whether it's softscape planter beds or hardscapes such as patios, walkways, fire pits, and more.

Recently, a client asked us to construct a pergola in their backyard in Rancho Santa Fe and we were thrilled to help them add something new to their outdoor living space.

Learn more about this project and why a pergola is beneficial for properties in the northern San Diego area, including cities such as Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, and more.

What Is a Pergola?

A pergola can be a free-standing structure or can be attached to a building. It is open on all sides, allowing for air and light to freely pass through, resembling an archway or an arbor, but on a grander scale. The roof is made from latticed pieces that are supported by underlying beams.

Adding a Custom Pergola Creates a Shaded Area

Building a custom pergola for a home in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.

In this particular case, the client wanted a new custom pergola to be added in their backyard so that they could have shade over their outdoor kitchen area. Cooking can get hot, especially in direct sunlight. We built them a long pergola that extends from their house all the way to the end of their outdoor kitchen. This will create a shaded area for them that still allows them to fully experience the outdoors.

What Are the Benefits of a Custom Pergola?

There are many great reasons to choose a pergola for your outdoor living space, especially when you use a pergola contractor to design and install it for you. The many benefits of a custom pergola include:

  • A pergola provides shade. Granted, the roof of a pergola is not completely closed, but many people choose to use vining plants to grow around it. This only increases its beauty and helps it be more integrated into the overall design plan. Common vining plants that you may see on pergolas include wisteria, ivy, or even bougainvillea.
  • Pergolas provide space definition. Before this pergola was installed, the outdoor kitchen was just sitting in the backyard by itself, along with a pool. The pergola helps to define that outdoor area, separating the kitchen from the pool while still keeping open space. It's a great element to use when considering an overall landscape design. You can also consider adding curtains or screens to the pergola for added privacy.
  • Pergolas are made with low-maintenance and durable materials. Pergolas can be vinyl or wood, but vinyl is a good choice if you don't want to worry about rotting or having to treat the wood every few years. Some pergolas are also made with metal
  • Pergolas can add to your overall home value. As with any outdoor improvement project, pergolas can add to a home's value. Maintaining a pergola and the plant growth around it can make for a huge differentiator if you ever try to sell your home.
